One requirement for naturalization is showing “good moral character.” This includes financially supporting minor children, regardless of where they live or whether there is a court order to pay child support. Willful failure to support minor children may result in USCIS denying your naturalization application.

You may need to bring evidence to your naturalization interview to prove you support your minor children (under age 18) who do not live with you.

Examples of evidence to bring:
If there is a court order for child support, bring:

  • Evidence/receipts showing you are paying child support or are currently on a payment plan to make up missed payments.
    -OR-
  • Evidence you are financially unable to make the required payments.
  • Evidence you have made sincere efforts to support your child.

If there is not a court order for child support, bring:

  • Evidence of an informal agreement to provide financial support.
  • Evidence/receipts showing you are following through on this agreement.
  • Written testimony from family members that you are financially supporting your children.
    – OR –
  • Evidence you are financially unable to provide financial support.
  • Evidence you have made sincere efforts to support your child.
