Redefining the Dream: Empowering Others While Reclaiming My Own Path

“I’m originally from Cali, Colombia. Moving away from my home was one of the most challenging experiences of my life. When I first arrived in the U.S., I barely spoke English and was faced with a completely new culture. I never really dreamed of living in America—I was happy in my country. But due to the economic situation, I had to leave.

I thought I had a plan: to start a business and work with high-end clients, just as I had in Colombia. But the truth is, I wasn’t prepared for the realities of starting over in a new country.

I came with just three suitcases and a lot of hope. Like many immigrants, I had to begin from scratch—cleaning houses, babysitting, working in restaurants—doing whatever it took to support my family and build a new life.

Today, I feel proud of how far I’ve come. I’m currently pursuing a Liberal Arts degree with a focus in Psychology at North Shore Community College. I work as a Program Manager for EforAll, a nonprofit that supports underrepresented entrepreneurs. I mostly work with the Latino community because I know firsthand how hard it is to adjust and find your place in a new country.

And I’m proudest of all that both of my sons are thriving. One is studying video game design at USC, and the other is at MIT—both on full scholarships. Project Citizenship helped me on my own journey to become a U.S. citizen. Now, they’re supporting me once again as I begin the process for my children. I’m deeply grateful for their support—they don’t just help with paperwork; they help us take root and grow in this country.”
